ABOUT CHARLES CRINER
As an artist, illustrator, and printmaker, Charles Criner is foremost a storyteller. Like the folktales that preserve personal, familial, and communal memories passed down from one generation to the next, the stories told in his works carry a strength that comes from their directness and simplicity.

What is told through Criner’s works is timeless. His family and friends morph into heroines and heroes of old tales: strong black women toiling in the field echo the image of his grandmother and pensive fishermen are born of Papa Jack. His friendship with Dr. John Biggers and the next generation of artists with whom he works, are fellow storytellers who build and sustain our communities. Criner, the storyteller himself, searches his own spirit and soul through his works.
